Goodwill

message to the community

September is traditionally the month we ask our employees for their thoughts and opinions about wage and benefit equity, workplace safety, job satisfaction, training opportunities and a variety of other issues.  I am happy to report that over the years, we have had positive reactions; they feel they are treated fairly; they feel they work in a safe environment and in general, enjoy their work.  So it’s not surprising to find a core group of employees who have worked here for many years.

When the results of the survey are published, one of the questions I pay particular attention to is number 20: “What are the reasons you stay at Goodwill?”  Two themes become apparent: first, they enjoy the atmosphere in which they work and they enjoy their co-workers.  And secondly, they believe they are making a difference in someone’s life by contributing to Goodwill’s mission.

It is appropriate, then, to begin this annual report to the community with the Agency’s reason for existence.  Goodwill’s mission is to prepare people with employment barriers for work and to manage diverse operations that create jobs for people with disabilities.  Goodwill addresses this responsibility through the management of seven federal contracts, the oversight of a number of training and educational programs and the operation of eleven retail stores.

On December 31, 2007, Goodwill employed 482 people.  Approximately $11.7 million in wages and benefits were paid to our employees last year.  By year-end, 5,405 people had been enrolled in one of a variety of Goodwill programs.  We helped 1,182 find jobs at an average starting wage of $8.15 per hour.  Once again this year, Goodwill is a major contributor to the social and economic fabric of our community.

On behalf of the people enrolled in Goodwill programs and our nearly 500 employees, thank you for your support.
