youthbuild omaha building your community

Thirty-two young people in the Omaha-metro area who never completed high school will receive a second chance to attain their diplomas due to a $400,000 grant awarded to Goodwill Industries from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to fund Omaha’s first Youthbuild program – Youthbuild Omaha.

Youthbuild is a national educational, leadership, development and occupational skill-training program for disadvantaged young adults, ages 16–24. Participants will divide their time between classroom-based learning activities and on-site construction training.

Youthbuild Omaha is a 30-month program involving a strong consortium of partners including Metropolitan Community College (Metro), Habitat for Humanity, University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), and Turning Point.

Participants will work with Habitat for Humanity to build three homes for low-income families. Participants will learn basic construction skills, tool identification, and blue print reading. Metro and UNO will provide GED preparation and leadership development. The program will be housed at Turning Point.

Upon completion of the program, graduates of Youthbuild Omaha will receive placement and follow-up services.
